Every individual has a distinct talent that they excel in. It is how they differentiate themselves from the crowd. Someone who might be artistic and good with colors, might not be the best candidate for number-crunching jobs. All individuals are blessed with a gift that reflects the best sides of their personalities. We can understand this with a small story that reflects why hiring assessments are a valuable tool for hiring the right talent.
The story takes us to the Great Forest where one day parents of all animals thought of getting them enrolled in a school so that they can learn essential life skills needed to succeed in the forest and beyond. For this task, all parents came together and formed a school, while hiring professional teachers tasked with teaching all skills as requested. In order to ensure that equal learning opportunities are provided, a standardized curriculum was adopted that focused on climbing, swimming, flying and running as the essential skills all animal students should master.
Among the students were children of rabbits, ducks, eagles, and squirrels. As the classes started, all animal students gathered and were excited to start their next phase of learning. It was natural for all animal students to top the class as per their distinct strengths and talents. The rabbits topped when it came to running and displayed hyperactive behavior by hopping around. Likewise, the ducks gracefully mastered the art of swimming, the squirrels outclassed everyone when it came to climbing trees, and the Eagles were unstoppable when they started flying high in the sky.
But the teachers got concerned. Rather than learning all four skills, animal students were good at just one. The ducks were given extra classes on running that made their feet sore, resulting in average swimming results. The rabbits were asked to walk rather than run, and due to excess swimming lessons, they developed fur problems. To help squirrels fly the right way, they were asked to join the gym, and do paw strengthening exercises. They barely passed the test. Lastly, the high flying eagles were diagnosed with the oppositional-defiant disorder and were put under strict behavior program.
In the end, the animal students forgot what they were best at and ended up being mediocre. It does sound similar to what we go through ourselves. Everyone can correlate to the times when they were asked to perform a job they did not enjoy or were proficient at.
It is for this very reason that hiring assessments are so valuable and critical for identifying the right talent. A talent assessment is not just about identifying the right fit for the job candidate, it is also about the ability of an individual to perform their tasks in a manner that contributes towards the growth of their own and their teams. The right talent will add value to your team and will help fill gaps that are needed to master and ace the situation. After all, no one would recommend hiring an eagle to be part of your swimming department, would you?
